I hope you enjoy this drum cover, in which we see The Beatles in a lively live performance, with the audience's excitement palpable. This clip features the iconic line-up of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, showcasing their incredible presence on The Ed Sullivan Show on 9 February 1964.
By 1963, The Beatles were already a phenomenon in the United Kingdom with hits such as ‘Please Please Me’ and ‘She Loves You’. Their manager, Brian Epstein, and producer George Martin were determined to conquer America. After the assassination of JFK in November 1963, the US needed cheer; the song ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ came just in time, recorded in October and released in January 1964, climbing to #1 on Billboard. Capitol Records, pressured by Epstein, invested in massive promotion. Ed Sullivan, impressed by 300 screaming fans at Heathrow Airport during their visit to London, invited them on his show after initially rejecting them.
On 9 February, at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York (capacity 728), 50,000 ticket requests arrived. John, Paul, George and Ringo, with their long hair and black suits, played twice that night before 73 million television viewers — 45% of the US population, a record for a variety show. They opened with ‘All My Loving,’ ‘Till There Was You’ (a Broadway cover that delighted the conservative audience), ‘She Loves You,’ ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ and ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand.’
Sales exploded: 3.5 million singles and 1 million copies of Meet the Beatles! in a matter of days. The ‘British Invasion’ (the Rolling Stones and The Who followed) dominated the radio. It inspired future rockers such as Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel, who watched that night. It changed television: music shows prioritised youth rock over vaudeville.
This show marked the end of the post-Eisenhower era and the boom of counterculture. For Beatlemaniacs, it was the ‘big bang’ that globalised their creative genius, paving the way for Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper. Today, 62 years later, it is celebrated as the day pop music became massive and eternal.
