This is description
In 1964, Ford built an engine so powerful NASCAR banned it before it ever turned a competitive lap. 60 years later, at 92 years old, the greatest engine builder who ever lived — Ed Pink — constructed one final modern version of that engine. He tuned every chain, every tolerance, every secret. Then walked away. Never turned the key. Not once.
The roar that should have shaken the world died with him in April 2025.
This is the 427 SOHC "Cammer" — Ford's 90-day wonder. 616 horsepower at 7,000 RPM in factory trim. Race-prepared versions pushed past 700. In 1964. For context: a 2025 Mustang GT makes 480.
Chrysler's 426 Hemi was crushing Ford on NASCAR's high banks. Richard Petty and the Mopar teams finished 1-2-3, and Ford's conventional 427 wedge was outgunned. The order came down from Dearborn: win at any cost.
The solution was radical. Take the existing 427 FE block and crown it with single overhead camshafts per bank — drawing from Formula 1 and IndyCar. Massive hemispherical combustion chambers. 2.25-inch intake valves, sodium-filled exhausts. A labyrinthine 7-foot triple timing chain system. No pushrods. Direct cam-over-valve actuation.
The engine was mesmerizing. And terrifying. One misstep during assembly and it would grenade in seconds.
NASCAR killed it before it ever raced — deemed "not a production engine" and saddled with a brutal 4,400-pound weight handicap. Ford walked away. But what NASCAR rejected, drag racing embraced.
Enter Ed Pink.
Ford handed Pink the Cammer in 1966 and asked him to turn the temperamental 800-pound monster into a competitive weapon. He did. Don Prudhomme, driving a Pink-tuned Cammer dragster, recorded the sport's first official 6-second passes at the 1967 NHRA Spring Nationals. On nitrous, Pink's Cammers produced 2,000–2,500 horsepower.
Pink built over 5,000 engines across six decades — Hemis, Cosworths, Buick V6 turbos, Toyota Silver Crown engines. He won in every category he touched. NHRA. IndyCar. USAC dirt. LMP2 sports cars. Japanese Super GT. His motto: "First, you have to make the engine live. Then you make it run faster."
At 92, he built one last Cammer. Aluminum block. Electronic fuel injection. Custom chromoly timing chains. A 7-degree cam offset he'd spent decades perfecting. Kinsler stacks blended with Hilborn-style injection. Every clearance measured and re-measured in silence.
He finished it. Admired it. And never turned the key.
