Ed Sheeran became emotional on stage as he addressed the extraordinary fallout surrounding Macklemore’s removal from his US tour following the rapper’s pro-Palestinian comments.
Speaking to thousands of fans in Philadelphia, Sheeran admitted he had questioned whether the tour would continue and whether he even wanted to remain an artist as the controversy intensified.
The singer described people he had known for years “backing away” and said he felt friends, family and people close to him were abandoning him. He also revealed his uncertainty about taking the stage, saying he did not know whether he or fans would be safe, whether people would boo or whether objects might be thrown.
The controversy erupted after Macklemore was removed from dates on Sheeran’s Loop Tour following comments in support of Palestine. A number of supporting artists and Sheeran’s backing band subsequently withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.
Sheeran has said the decision to remove Macklemore was not his, while also apologising for mistakes in how the situation was handled. Addressing the wider Israel-Gaza conflict, he condemned the October 7 Hamas attack as horrific while describing the devastation and loss of civilian life in Gaza as catastrophic and unjustifiable.
Despite calls for the concert to be cancelled, Sheeran told the Philadelphia crowd that seeing around 50,000 fans still turn up had given him hope. Fighting back emotion, he spoke about music bringing together people of different backgrounds, religions and political views before declaring that he could not let his fans down.
The deeply personal speech came during one of the most turbulent weeks of Sheeran’s career as the Macklemore controversy, Palestine debate and questions around artistic freedom continue to dominate discussion around his US tour.
