Applying early decision to Brown PLME sounds like a smart move, and for strong applicants it's a trap. I put Brown's Class of 2028 numbers on the whiteboard and walk through exactly what happens to the kids who ED PLME: who gets in, who gets rejected, and who gets admitted to Brown without PLME and is bound anyway. I applied RD, got Brown but not PLME, and picked a BS/MD instead, so this is the math I wish someone had shown me.
What I go through:
- The three outcomes when you ED PLME: free, trapped, or in
- Brown ED vs RD: 14.4% vs 4.1%, so ED is worth about 3.5x at Brown
- PLME overall: 76 of 4,251, about 1.8%
- PLME ED vs RD: about 3% vs 1.5%, so ED is worth about 2x for PLME, and 2x of 1.5% is still 3%
- Why the trap bucket grows the stronger you are
- The only situation where ED PLME makes sense
