About 100 Con Edison workers packed Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday to confront ex-NYPD detective Victor Romero, who is accused of shooting their colleague to death in a road rage incident on the George Washington Bridge last week.
Chris Demmerle described to reporters his relationship with Koran Irvine, a 46-year-old husband and father who was a veteran Con Edison electrician and mechanic.
"Yes, I worked with him, a close family friend. We went out, you know, soccer games, hanging out, his kids knew my kids," Demmerle said. "I had to take my kids out of school the other day and explain to them what was going on. So that they wouldn't see it somewhere else before I got the chance to tell them that their friend's father was killed."
After his arrest, Romero's charge was initially downgraded from murder to manslaughter. This decision was reversed Tuesday by a grand jury, according to Manhattan District Attorney spokesperson Douglas Cohen, amid an "extensive ongoing investigation since the criminal court arraignment last Thursday."
Romero, 62, has been free on a million dollar bail and is expected back in court on Nov. 23.
