In an unexpected announcement, Housing Secretary Michael Gove has revealed he won't be standing in the upcoming general election on July 4th.
The long-serving cabinet minister, whose political career has spanned nearly two decades, cited the "toll" of public office as his reason for stepping down, further declaring it's time to let "a new generation lead" after nearly 20 years in the game.
After a campaign visit to Derbyshire, where PM Rishi Sunak posed for selfies, Gove made his announcement. He has represented Surrey Heath since 2005 and served under four different prime ministers.
In a heartfelt letter to his constituency chairman, Gove called his time as an MP and minister a "profound privilege." He heaped praise on Sunak, highlighting the PM's embodiment of "the very best virtues" of the Tory party, but firmly stated "it is time to leave."
Gove's departure deals a heavy blow to Sunak, whose election campaign is already on shaky ground. A record number of Conservative MPs have declared they won't be running for re-election, adding to the Prime Minister’s mounting challenges.
