The Beatles debuting “Yesterday” on The Ed Sullivan Show.
On August 14, 1965, The Beatles took the stage on The Ed Sullivan Show for the fourth and final time in their historic run of performances that helped introduce them to American audiences.
The 1988 Inductees performed six songs, including “I Feel Fine,” “Ticket to Ride,” “Help!,” and this performance of what would become one of their biggest hits, “Yesterday.” Taped just one day before their historic concert at Shea Stadium, this marked the first time Paul McCartney performed without the rest of the group.
“Yesterday” had been released in the U.K. just days earlier on Help! but would make its American debut as a single in September 1965. With more than 2,200 recorded cover versions, “Yesterday” has become one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music — and one of The Beatles’ most enduring tracks.
