This is description
Could racers hide nitrous inside a fire extinguisher—and get away with it? Ed Smith tells Barry T how early racers concealed nitrous systems, experimented with bottle pressure and kept adding horsepower until something broke.
Ed also brings out original nitrous hardware and explains the difference between nitrous oxide and nitromethane, under-carburetor spray plates, tunnel-ram nozzles, fuel delivery, bottle pickup tubes and how nitrous was used on early street and race cars.
A technical note in the episode clarifies that nitrous does not change an engine’s mechanical compression ratio. It supplies additional oxygen and cools the intake charge, allowing more fuel to burn and increasing cylinder pressure.
Later, Barry and Ed discuss lubricating a freshly assembled engine, clutch pressure against the crankshaft thrust bearing, timing-chain lubrication, the Pontiac 301 Turbo V8, Slick 50 and vintage engine additives, Carter Thermo-Quad warpage, carburetor secondary linkage, engine run-on, Ford FE 410 oil pumps, balancing flathead Dodge and Plymouth pistons, flywheel and clutch balance, and four-ring pistons.
